For A Tranquil Australian Getaway, Visit Ross In Tasmania

The historic town of Ross is located in the Australian state of Tasmania. It lies 76 meters above sea level, 78 km from Launceston, and 117 km from Hobart. The area was first explored by a European surveyor, Charles Grimes, in 1807 while he was traveling through the central valley area in Tasmania.

This particular Australian state has an abundance of fascinating 19th Century colonial towns, but it is said that Ross is arguably the most beautiful. As such, it has a lot of tourist appeal although it has not been overly affected by modern tourism. Much of its sleepy aura is due to the fact that the busy highway between Launceston and Hobart bypasses the town.

Ross has a typical English character which is enhanced by the many sandstone buildings. These are reminiscent of those that you will find in the English regions of north Oxfordshire and the Cotswold. It has been said that Ross looks as though it has been preserved in aspic.

The pride of the town is its magnificent stone bridge which was built in 1836 by convicts. It is one of only three old bridges in Australia that still stands. While the other two were also built by convicts, the Ross Bridge is the most impressive because two of the convict builders were stonemasons by trade.

On the one side of the bridge there is a protected area for ducks and swans. The other side is a popular angling area where you can try your hand at trout fishing. A visit to the lovely Somercot's Cottage is highly recommended. This is just a few kilometers out of the town. It was built by Captain Samuel Horton in 1840 and features a cobbled courtyard and a 20 paned French window.

Visitors can really appreciate the appeal of the town in Church Street. Of its 40 historic buildings, no less than 22 are situated in this street. To get a glimpse into the past, catch a bus or take a taxi to Uniting Church at the top end of the street and walk back. There are many fascinating specialty shops that offer jewelry, antiques, crafts, furniture, china, pottery, and all sorts of collectibles.

Admire fine examples of colonial buildings like St John's Church of England. Built in 1868, it has a functioning organ that is over 100 years old. The church is also noted for its superb stained glass windows, the oak lectern, and unique stone pulpit.

You will also find the famous Tasmanian Wool Center in Church Street. It specializes in high quality, distinctive, products made from locally produced wool. Here, you can see the Wool Exhibition which showcases displays of wool samples and fine garments. Browse through the gift shop which offers a range of clothing, blankets, wool and Tasmanian crafts.

If the idea of a restful getaway in Australia appeals to you, you should definitely consider Ross. This beautiful town has withstood commercialism and maintained its aesthetic beauty and peacefulness. There are a number of accommodation options that include hotels, inns, Bed and Breakfasts, guesthouses, apartments, cottages, cabins, caravan parks, and camping sites.
