Moreton-in-Marsh is a town found in Gloucestershire. This town is right where an old Roman Road, Fosse Way, intersects with the A44. The name actually means Farmstead on the Moor and in the marches. Many of the buildings in the town are built of local Cotswold stone.

A great attraction is the Batsford Arboretum which is a botanical garden and Arboretum. Many of the plants are from Asia as the estate was owned by Algernon Mitford who traveled widely in the continent and landscaped his gardens after Japanese and Chinese plantings. Sezincote is a large estate that uses Neo-Mughal architecture. The house itself looks a bit like an onion. All of the buildings use red sandstone and white marble. While the outside of the building is quite exotic looking the interior is decorated in a European style. The gardens are landscaped in the renaissance style.

You can find many old inns and hotels that originate from the coaching era when the Fosse Way was used extensively and Moreton-in-Marsh was a coach stop. There are some interesting buildings along the main street such as the white Hart Royal and the Manor House which is now a hotel. These buildings date back to the 16th and 17th centuries. Touring Warren County, PA - Small Town, Big Value

Warren County's history is intimately tied to native Indian tribes and the first westward push of American settlers. The Chautauqua-to-Ohio waterways were considered strategically important to the Indians, as well as the French, British and Americans. The Senecas, now in nearby Salamanca NY, were the original inhabitants along the Allegheny River and its tributaries. Chief Cornplanter fought with Britain during the Revolutionary War, and later negotiated treaties with President Washington. Conewango, means "walking slowly", and refers to the usually placid waters of the creek that connects Chautauqua Lake in nearby New York with the Allegheny River.

Warren was named for Revolutionary War hero, General Joseph Warren. He died at Bunker Hill, and had no actual ties to Warren County. Fourteen counties, one fort and five ships have been named in his honor.

General William Irvine, also a war hero, surveyed Warren in 1795. The general received a land grant along the Brokenstraw Creek. His oldest son, lived there briefly. His grandson, Dr. William Irvine, settled there. William's last surviving granddaughter died in 1963.

Imagine for a moment that it's two centuries ago. There are fortunes to be made in the stately forests and fertile valleys of the western Alleghenies. Lumbermen and traders established shipping routes. Farmers and families soon followed. Oil flowed and fortunes accumulated. By the mid-1800's, Warren was a thriving community. The buildings of the 28-block historic district reflect the varied architectural tastes of the newly wealthy Warrenites.

Day 1: The Warren County Historical Society is a good place to start (M-F). The 1873 mansion houses rooms of antiques and old photos. Spend a leisurely half hour or more on your own, or call ahead for a guided tour. Before you leave, pick up a brochure of the Historic District Walking Tour. This around-the-block walk showcases twelve of Warren's finest historic buildings. From an 1830's cottage to the 1876 three-story Courthouse, you'll learn a bit of the history of the families who lived here.

One block south of the tour route on Market Street is the Warren Public Library. Enjoy the architecture, statuary and art gallery in this 1916 structure. If you like to read, check out their Book Cellar for great deals on used books. One block north of the tour route is the Horton House B&B. The Liberty Street Café is a cozy nook in downtown Warren for a leisurely libation. This world-class café offers the finest in sushi, seafood and Beaux Arts cuisine. They sometimes have live jazz on Thursday or Friday evenings.

For funky fun and good food, try Legends Restaurant on Jackson Avenue. Dine in a caboose ... beside a 1949 pink Cadillac ... or al fresco on the deck. Antiques, oldies and shareable-sized portions 'rule' at Legends.

Another great eatery is the Draft House on Pennsylvania Ave E. This bar-cum-restaurant has mouth-watering beef-on-wick, Reuben sandwiches, crisp salads, a varied dinner menu and nightly specials. It's great for lunch (except weekends) or dinner.

For evening entertainment, check the schedule at the Struther's Library Theater. If something is happening - GO! Whatever is playing - shows, plays, movies - it's always excellent. Take time to explore the building, circa 1883. The Struthers is home to the Warren Players' Club, one of the oldest continuously operating amateur theater companies in the nation. The troupe has performed for more than seven decades.

Day 2: Head west on Route 6/62 to visit the Amish Outlet for hand-crafted items and home-made foods. The area Visitor's Center is another half-mile on the left. Stop in for brochures and information on what's happening in "Kinzua Country".

Tour the Wilder Museum, just off Route 62 in Irvine. Displays include Indian artifacts, 'women in WWII', and the DeFrees firearms collection. The museum often hosts special programs and changing exhibits.

For nature-lovers, get outdoors at Buckaloons Recreation Area. A flat one-mile interpretive trail is an easy and peaceful walk. The trail meanders along Irvine Run and the Allegheny River. It's particularly beautiful in the fall.

Stop for lunch at Richard's Restaurant on Route 6 in Youngsville for sandwiches, homemade soups and home-style entrees. While you're in Youngsville, stop in the new gallery, Allegheny Artistry, on Main Street.

Afternoon activities could include a driving tour of Underground Railroad sites, horseback riding at an area ranch, or a trip 'down river' to Tidioute. Just north of Tidioute is the Simpler Times Museum. Dedicated to the area's major industries, it features antique tractors and engines, plus farming and logging displays.

For dinner, stop at any of the local restaurants. If you're back in Warren, dine at Fernwood. Don't let the exterior fool you. The chef is excellent and servers are prompt and friendly. Specialties include steaks and seafood. It's a local favorite.

Tonight, if the Library Theater is 'dark', go to Soldiers & Sailors Park for 'Music in the Park'. Live bands play Friday and Saturday evenings throughout the summer.
There's limited seating, so bring your own blanket/lawn chair. Wander along the riverwalk at Breezewood Landing adjacent to the park.

Day 3: This morning, have breakfast at the Peppermill Restaurant on Pennsylvania Avenue E. They feature home-cooking and quick service. Head out Route 59, stopping at Kinzua Dam and Big Bend Visitor Center.

Further east on Rt 59 is Rimrock Overlook, with trails through glacier-strewn bolders and magnificent views of the reservoir and mountains. In June the area is vibrant with mountain laurel, Pennsylvania's state flower. Rimrock offers easier trails than Jake's Rocks, which is across the valley (other side of Casey Bridge).

During the summer, nosh at Docksiders Café, adjacent to Wolf Run Marina. Casual dining on the deck or inside (Tell them 'easy on the ice'.). The view of the reservoir and hills is relaxing. Sunday afternoon, live entertainment begins at 3:00.

If you still have time and energy, backtrack to Route 6 and head east toward Sheffield.
Allegheny Cellars Winery is open until 6 p.m. daily for tasting, tours and purchases. It's one of Warren County's newest attractions.

Detroit Travel - Sue Mosey and The Inn on Ferry Street - An Example of a Great Urban Vision

My abode for my last two days in Detroit was the Inn on Ferry Street, a beautifully renovated complex of six historic buildings in the Midtown area of Detroit. It encompasses four mansions as well as two carriage houses that were each built for prominent Detroit families. After many years of languishing, these buildings have been re-functioned into 42 stunning guest rooms.

The East Ferry Avenue Historic District is a historic area in Midtown Detroit, which is also referred to as Detroit's Cultural Centre. Well-preserved elegant mansions from the 1880s and 1890s line the streets and recall an era when these villas were owned by some of Detroit's wealthiest citizens. This historic district represents one of the largest and least altered collections of Detroit's leading architects of the late nineteenth century.

Midtown, the surrounding area, is also referred to as the "Cultural Center Historic District" because of its large concentration of museums, including the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Museum of African American History, the Detroit Historical Museum, the Main Branch of the Detroit Public Library, the Detroit Science Centre and the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit. Wayne State University is located nearby, and a multitude of restaurants, galleries and nightlife venues make this area a popular destination.

I had a chance to sit down with Sue Mosey, the driving force behind the renovation of the six buildings that make up the Inn on Ferry Street. Sue is an urban planner and the President of theUniversity Cultural Center Association, a non-profit organization that has aided in planning and developing nearly $400 million in new residential projects in Detroit's Midtown area.

Sue Mosey is one of Detroit's most visionary and influential citizens. With more than 20 years of experience as an urban planner, Sue has dedicated her entire career to non-profit organizations that improve her city. She is the president of the University Cultural Center Association, a nonprofit community development group which promotes the revitalization and development of Detroit's Midtown area. Detroit's lack of strong city planners and developers has created a space for non-profit organizations and independent professionals who have been working hard to improve the city.

Under Sue Mosey's leadership the Midtown area has attracted more than $400 million in new residential investments; roughly 2800 housing units have been created or are being planned. Projects include planning support, real estate development, attraction of retailers and businesses, beautification and public safety improvement programs, the organization of local festivals and events and much more. Most recently Sue is working on getting a two-mile greenway off the ground to provide Midtown residents with safe recreational opportunities for walking, jogging and cycling. One of her main goals is to attract more people and businesses to the Midtown area.

Around the turn of the last century Detroit became a powerhouse in automotive manufacturing: the Ford Motor Company was founded in 1904 and other automotive pioneers built extensive factories in Detroit. The success of Ford's Model T made car ownership accessible to the masses and created a large demand for automobiles. Thousands of African-American former plantation workers migrated north to participate in the manufacturing boom and the new prosperity offered to assembly line workers.

The economic slowdown following the end of World War I and, from 1929 onwards, the Great Depression put a damper on these economic aspirations. As jobs dwindled, old racial prejudices resurfaced and race relations became severely strained during the 1920s. The 1930s were a period of bitter labour strife in Detroit.

During the 1940s the world's first sunken expressway was constructed in Detroit, and World War II sparked demand for weapons and spurred industrial growth. Changing demographics and long-entrenched racism led to racial tensions between Detroit's African-American and White populations which escalated into a full-scale riot in 1943 during which 34 people were killed and 600 injured.

During the 1950s and 1960s an extensive network of highways was constructed in Detroit which made it easier for people to commute and move into the suburbs. Poor housing conditions, economic factors and police prejudice against African-Americans led to another devastating race riot in 1967. This event together with school desegregation led to white flight, a demographic trend where working and middle-class white people moved into the suburbs. Large numbers of jobs also relocated into the outskirts, and as a result, Detroit's tax base eroded and its population declined from about 1.8 million in 1950 to around 900,000 today. Large tracts of housing were simply abandoned as people moved away from the city.

The gasoline crisis of the 1970s also impacted the Detroit auto industry while the city was increasingly afflicted by the heroin and crack cocaine trade during the 1980s. Many of the abandoned houses had become crack houses and havens for drug dealers. The city responded by demolishing countless buildings, leaving behind large swaths of vacant land, often referred to as "urban prairies". Demolitions are still continuing today and some parts of the city are marred by large numbers of abandoned buildings and empty lots.

However, from the 1990s and into the 2000s, Detroit started to experience a significant revival: the Comerica Tower was built in 1993; new state-of-the-art sports stadiums were constructed for the Detroit Lions and the Detroit Tigers; three casinos opened inside the city. In recent years, several large-scale events have also added to the city's renaissance: the 2005 MLB All-Star Game, the 2006 Super Bowl, the 2006 Word Series and WrestleMania in 2007 were all held in Detroit. In October of 2008, one of the most ambitious architectural restoration programs was unveiled when the historic Book Cadillac Hotel was reopened under the Westin flag after a $200 million investment and 24 years of abandonment.

Many revival initiatives have happened in Detroit over the years, and in the mid-town area many of them came together directly or indirectly because of the involvement of Sue Mosey and the University Cultural Center Association (UCCA). This non-profit organization is involved in the organization of special events, planning, transportation and public awareness campaigns. Sue added that since 2000 more than $2 billion have been invested in the Midtown area. Other areas of Detroit are also undergoing redevelopment as I witnessed myself during my walk through the historic Brush Park neighbourhood. Neighbourhoods like these are an interesting mix of shuttered buildings, vacant lots, recently restored historic buildings and brand-new real estate developments.

Sue Mosey does not want to want to dwell on the past, but looks forward to the things that remain to be done. Current initiatives at the University Cultural Center Association include a variety of beautification and maintenance projects, real estate developments including mixed lofts and the Midtown Loop Greenway trail, park redevelopments and streetscape enhancements. The UCCA also handles marketing for the Midtown area with a brand campaign, cultural events, a neighbourhood guide and a residential marketing program to promote living in Midtown Detroit.

The activities of the UCCA also extend to economic development and the attraction of new businesses and investment into the Midtown area. To this end the organization offers loan programs, development funds and grant programs for business and neighbourhood revitalization. Community events and the creation of a vibrant neighbourhood are also part of the UCCA's mandate. Midtown flagship events such as the Detroit Festival of the Arts showcase art and entertainment provided by Cultural Center institutions and program. Another popular event organized by the UCCA is "Noel Night", a holiday-themed community festival with live performances, crafts, demonstrations and art sales.

One of the key issues according to Sue Mosey is to create a better image of Detroit. Due to its economic and social problems over the last few decades, Detroit has been tarnished by negative news which have had a particularly strong effect on people from the surrounding suburban counties. The recent mayoral scandals added further fuel to the fire and created a negative perception of the city. Sue Mosey and the organizations she is involved with are working hard on initiatives that improve the public perception of the city. One of Sue Mosey's goals is to bring the suburbanites back into the city by making Detroit a great place to live, work and play.

Important ingredients for this urban revitalization include improved public transit (a light rail rapid transit line along Woodward Avenue is currently being discussed). Quality of life issues such as green spaces and recreational trails, wider sidewalks and attractive streetscaping; an introduction of more small businesses and retailers into Detroit's various neighbourhoods; public art installations and large-scale projects like the Detroit International Riverfront are all part of making Detroit a more attractive place to visit and to live in.

One of the practical examples of the activities of the University Center Cultural Association is the renovation of the Inn on Ferry Street. This complex of six historic buildings that today makes up the Inn on Ferry Street came under ownership by the Detroit Institute of Arts in the 1970s when the buildings were mostly used for music lessons and storage.

Finally plans were made to restore these unique buildings and to find a more appropriate use for them. A decision was made to turn these buildings into a 42-room boutique hotel. But renovating more than 40 rooms would be a tough economic challenge and required substantial amounts of money. In excess of $4 million of the project were funded through loans, and another $4+ million were raised through various grants. In total, more than twenty-four sources of finances were tapped into to put together the financing for this large-scale project.

Assistance for this project came from one of Detroit's most fervent supporters. Mr. Richard Manoogian, the owner of Masco Corporation, a Fortune 500 corporation that manufactures and distributes building and home improvement products, made available deep discounts on building supplies and interior dcor products. The renovations on the six buildings that were to make up the Inn on Ferry Street started in 2000 and were finally completed in 2001. The property opened in November of 2001, just shortly after the 911 terrorist attacks had caused a severe downturn in the entire tourism industry. The next three years were very tough, but in 2004 finally occupancy rose to 74%.

Today the Inn on Ferry Street features 42 unique and gorgeously designed guest rooms, a large breakfast room (breakfast is included free of charge), a business centre with complimentary meeting space for guests and great common areas in all the buildings that allow the guests to socialize and relax.
The Inn on Ferry Street provides a great Midtown location with excellent amenities for leisure and business travellers. In addition to the business centre, it provides free wireless Internet access, a free shuttle service covering the Midtown and Downtown areas, valet service and room service. A big breakfast buffet is available every day from 6 am to 10 am at no extra charge, and coffees, teas and fresh fruit are available during the day.

The Rohm House finally was constructed in 1888 for the president of the Detroit Carriage Company. Nine guest bedrooms are located here and the popular second floor suite offers ultimate luxury with its Jacuzzi tub, private balcony and Asian influenced decor. The Inn on Ferry Street offers a great location in Detroit's Cultural Center and is a prime example of some of the architectural rejuvenation that has been happening in various parts of the city.

Given its complicated history, Detroit today is a very fascinating city. Despite past and current problems, Detroit has many different vibrant communities, each driven by local urbanists who love their city and their neighbourhoods. Sue Mosey is one of Detroit's foremost leaders of successful community redevelopment and has played a huge role in creating the new face of Midtown Detroit's Cultural Center. And the Inn on Ferry Street is a prime example of outstanding historic preservation and state-of-the-art refunctioning of properties that are definitely worth saving.

Richmond's Jackson Ward Neighborhood - "The Harlem of the South"

Historic Jackson Ward is one of Richmond, Virginia's oldest and well-preserved neighborhoods. Located east of Belvidere, west of Shockoe Bottom, and north of Broad, Jackson Ward is home to some of Richmond's most beautiful historic buildings, in addition to being the historical center of African-American culture during the early 1900's.

While the neighborhood was settled by European immigrants, the neighborhood has been a predominantly black neighborhood, and home to many influential figures over the years. Maggie Walker, the first African-American woman to run a bank, lived there. Giles Jackson, the first African-American to practice law before the Supreme Court of Virginia, lived and practiced there. We get this information, and much more, from a book found in the Virginia Commonwealth University James Branch Cabell Library's Special Collections titled Jackson Ward Historic District. While the book focuses mainly on the architecture and political significance of the neighborhood, many other sources refer to Jackson Ward's rich cultural and artistic heritage - the things that brought the neighborhood to be called "The Harlem of the South."

The Dementi family made a name for themselves as photographers of the wonders and people of Richmond. Wayne Dementi and a fellow named Brooks Smith put a book together called Facts and Legends of The Hills of Richmond, which is, in essence, a love story devoted to Richmond. In it, the authors discuss Jackson Ward, and confirm what many different online sources tell us - that Jackson Ward was THE place to go for young, hip black men and women in the 1920's. Just as Harlem was the center for black art and music in 1920's New York, Jackson Ward was the same for Virginia.

While Harlem had The Cotton Club, The Stork Club, and the Silver Slipper; Richmond had Happy Land, Top Hat, and Shorties. Jackson Ward saw many famous acts perform at these clubs. Cab Calloway performed in town. So did Lena Horne, Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, and Bill "Bojangles" Robinson, among many others. Robinson was actually a Richmond native who got his start dancing local bars in Jackson Ward and other neighborhoods in Richmond. He became famous all over the United States, appearing in plays and films.

Other Richmond natives that contributed to the cultural boom of the 1920's were the members of Roy Johnson's Happy Pals. A swing orchestra, they were 10 Richmond natives - Jackson Ward natives, in fact, who beat out Duke Ellington's orchestra in a 1929 New York band contest. Today the historic neighborhood is home to wonderful restaurants, grassroots art galleries, and many artists and homeowners who are dedicated to revitalizing one of Richmond's finest neighborhoods. One woman, Jenni Mennella, wrote about a tour she took of Richmond in 2002 - the point of which was to visit some sites in Richmond that are key to understanding Virginia's African-American culture. In addition to seeing many of the historical sites, she also ate at Croaker's (one of Jackson Ward's fine eateries) on 2nd and Leigh, and heard Soul Fantastic perform.

While Soul Fantastic might not be around anymore, you can still eat at Croaker's, and you can check out events and exhibits at Gallery 5, 1708 Gallery, Quirk Gallery, and more. Make sure to visit the Black History Museum and Cultural Center of Virginia. Other restaurants to visit are Comfort, Tarrant's Café, and Nick's Market. Jackson Ward is not only full of a rich history and bearer of an even richer legacy, but it also a hub of cultural activity and great entertainment in Richmond, Virginia.

Fly-Drive the East Coast of the USA

As fly-drive holidays are becoming increasingly popular, everyone wants to organise their own travel by travelling further in a short period of time. There are many different types of fly drives. Learn your route, look at places to go and what they have to offer, from small towns to big cities and make sure you have booked your hotels/hostels/camping where ever you may be. Finally, have a good time with it! It's your chance to explore USA in your own time and at your own pace, there is no rush and plan your time accordingly so when you get to your destination city, you have a few days to relax before your flight home.

Now the city we are going to start in is Boston in Massachusetts. Grab your hire car from the airport and you are off! There many museums in Boston that you can visit, such as The Boston Fire Museum, The J.F.K Presidential Library and Museum and The Museum of Science, which are just to name a few. There are so many restaurants and cafe's for you to just relax and enjoy some time in Boston, you will never get bored and you will always have something to do such as the Freedom Trail which will take you through a tour of Boston's history.

Our next stop is crossing states into Connecticut to Hartford. Make sure you have all your documents with you in case you get stopped at the state crossing. It's good to have your passport, Car hire documents, insurance, drivers license and your tickets from where you came and where you are going. It will take about 2 hours to get there and there are so many historic buildings to see. Including The Cathedral of St Joesph which is made from 281-foot limestone and has a 8000 pipe organ. Also the Mark Twain House and Museum home of the writer Samuel Clemens whom wrote The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. As well as many more to discover!

As we carry on our journey we will head down to New York in New York. This will take about 2hours I recommended you spend a good few days here. Being known as the City that Never Sleeps you will have so much to see and do, as well as a huge variety of foods to taste. Visit the Statue of Liberty, or go the top of the Empire State Building and view the entire city. As well as many parks and Attractions such as Central Park and shop until you drop at 5th Avenue.

Hop back into your car and drive about 2 hours to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Now if you only stay here a short time you must visit Independence Hall, where the Declaration of Independence was signed and the Liberty Bell. If you wish to spend more time here then why not visit the home of Edgar Alan Poe, or the Benjamin Franklin National Museum.

A 3 hour drive from here will take you to Washington, DC. Again here is a city rich in history with Lincoln Park, Old Town House, Washington Monument and also the White House are places to see. There is also a wonderful nightlife and many theatre productions for you enjoy. There are also many parks that you can relax in such as Rock Creek Park and Pocomac Park. Here you can also enjoy a game of Golf if you go with your friends to Rock Creek Golf Course.

Our next stop is another 2 hours to Richmond, Virginia. Here you can visit the Haunts of Richmond which will take you on a tour, or the Cemetery of Hollywood where two presidents are buried as well as thousands of confederate soldiers. Also go visit Maggie L. Walker National Historic Site as well as Richmond Battlefield Site where you can get a real taste of history.

Now head on down to Virginia Beach which will take you about 2 hours and relax by the longest stretch of beach in the world. There is also a very good night life here as it is a popular tourist resort, so why not stay here overnight and enjoy some relaxation with some friends or your family. You can learn to surf, play some golf, go to one of the many amusements parks, learn to play volleyball or even go swimming and diving in the sea. So you will never be bored of anything to do here.

Your next destination is about 3 hours away in North Carolina. Visit Rocky Mount which is a small city that is bursting with things to do. Take a 3 and half mile trail along the Tar river, take a time out in the memorial garden at Ebenezer Baptist Church, Enjoy some Gospel music in the country at Luther Barnes Fall Gospel Classic and many more for you to discover.

Jacksonville is 2 and a half hours away, and here you can enjoy Laser Tag and Paintball. There are also many cafe's and restaurants for you all to enjoy in this fairly new city. It is nearly 23 years old! There are lots of hotels and campsites for here to you to stay if you need to.

It will only take you about an hour or so to get to Wilmington which is famous for the hit TV shows Dawson's Creek and One Tree Hill being produced there. There are a vast array of attractions such as the Haunted Pub Crawl, Airlie Gardens as well as many museums too. This is wonderful city to visit.

Another 2 hours and a state crossing, you will reach Myrtle Beach in South Carolina. Here is another very relaxing beach resort for you and your family or friends to enjoy. There are many attractions for everyone to enjoy such as Hard Rock Park, Myrtle Diving and Fishing and Ripleys Aquarium are to name just a few. Here would be a really lovely place to stay overnight as well as it is a resort town so there will be many hotels that you can find along the beach.

Your next destination is Charleston which is just over 2 hours. This city is known as The Holy City due it many of it's parishes and churches. The First Baptist Church of Charleston is the oldest Baptist church in the South and the first Southern Baptist Church in existence so it is well worth a visit. It also worth visiting The Charleston Tea Plantation is a true working plantation and is amazing.

2 hours on is Savannah in Georgia which houses beautiful architecture and people from around the world come to see just these. There are many historic home to come and see here such as The Pink House and Sorrel Weed House. Also come and see a very historic place of worship Cathedral of St. John the Baptist. There are also many other things to do such as dolphin cruises and carriage rides as well as choice of shell collecting or even spot of shopping.

Your next destination is Brunswick in Georgia which is about hour and half away. Here you can visit Hofwyl-Broadfield Plantation Historic Site, which was once a rice plantation offers visitors a look at plantation life. An antebellum home, surrounded by oaks, magnolias and camellias and a museum provide artifacts of the slave age. You may also want to take a 3 - 4 hour cruise and enjoy dinner and perhaps a spot of gambling.

Stockport's Preserved Beauty

Stockport is a town which has delightfully preserved much of it's natural beauty, while still progressing into modern times. With about half of it's area being used for Parks, trails and walking paths, I'm sure that you can imagine Stockport's unspoiled charm.

With more than two hundred historic buildings, Stockport has much to offer in architectural delight. One such building that must not be missed is "Bramall hall". This is a beautiful old timber framed estate offering guided tours of it's great hall, servant's quarters, Victorian kitchen and so much more. Do not forget to spend some time in the park and visit the lovely gardens.

Stockport has many shops, cafes and eating establishments. One such shopping centre actually being housed inside of what was formerly the magistrate court house.

Stockport is a virtual playground of things to see and do. From museums, including the history museum to guided walking tours and the "Robinson's brewery" tour.

If you want to give the kids a rest from touring, check out where the locals take their children. "Run of the mill children's play centre" is located conveniently in Stockport, and offers the chance to play in their indoor play area. They also have special events and movement classes, as well as many healthy meal choices and snacks in their restaurant.

In Stockport you can see original streets of cobble stone, as well as their market place which has been operating for about seven hundred years. Here you can find just about anything.

"Chester zoo" is quite nearby Stockport and is one of the biggest, best zoos in all of the United Kingdom. With almost eight thousand animals and beautiful gardens, this would make a nice trip for kids and adults alike.

The Best Juneau Shore Excursion

Juneau is a beautiful small city set on a salt water channel and surrounded by magnificent alpine peaks. The capitol of Alaska, Juneau is a nature lover's paradise, with great shops, restaurants, and the only glacier within the municipal limits of any city.

Listed Buildings and Renovations

'Listing' was introduced by the British government after the Second World War. A listed building will be on the list of buildings of architectural and historical importance deemed to need protection from being demolished or being unsympathetically altered. When a building is submitted for inclusion and is accepted, it goes onto the list, hence 'listing'. The list includes cathedrals, castles, private houses, milestones and drinking fountains.

Building are listed as either Grade I or Grade II in England and Wales. A Grade I listing is considered more important. Both listing types have restrictions on what you can do the inside, outside and grounds of the property. (Scotland and Ireland have similar systems).

Listed buildings are by definition unique. Restoring one gives a real sense of pride in knowing you are improving something worth keeping. They are rare, important, of age and usually come with a premium.

One thing which is worth knowing is that VAT relief is available for some approved alterations or substantial reconstructions to listed buildings providing it is undertaken by a VAT-registered contractor.

Although owning and renovating a listed building is rewarding, they come with red tape and scrutiny from the local council. One problem is that there are very few clear rules governing what you can and can't do when renovating your building. This means you are governed by the interpretations of your individual listings officer.

The most important thing about renovating a listed building is to take advice on what needs doing and what the restrictions are before you undertake your project.

Your local council conservation office should be your first port of call. The local planning authority will then consult with English Heritage to make sure that the renovation is to done in the right way i.e. using the right materials and techniques to preserve the integrity of the build. If you get agreement, you will be given Listed Building Consent (LBC) and you can go ahead.

Making alterations without LBC can, in the worst case scenario, lead to fines and a one year prison sentence, and on top of that you can be forced to put the work right at your own expense so it is very important to do things properly. Even small alterations such as painting can require LBC so go careful.

Note also that if you own and neglect a listed property, legal action can be taken to force you to restore it.

Be aware that your build will be delayed more than usual because of all the necessary consultations. Also, the cost of the build is likely to be significantly greater than if it were not listed, as you will not be able to use modern materials and techniques and because some problems may not be discovered until work actually starts. On the up side, grants may be available from English Heritage, the council or local historical charities. Note that authentic replicas for period details are expensive, so always look at repair prices too.

A building survey, undertaken by a Chartered Building Surveyor will give you information on the type of construction and materials used in your building, and will give details of any defects found, their remedy and an indication of the likely cost. The use of modern impermeable materials can create problems in period houses constructed using traditional materials such as cob. This can lead to damp that can damage the structure.

Good builders and craftsmen are a must. Speak to their previous clients and find out if they'd use them again. Also check they have done the sort of work you are proposing before.

If you research the task properly and comply with all the rules you should end up with a wonderful period home of unique character which will be worth all the hard work invested in it.

It All Started in Philadelphia

Complying With Historic District Design Guidelines For Accessory Buildings

Historic preservation is an established part of city planning in many communities. This often includes the designation of individual buildings as well as entire neighborhoods (historic districts) as historically significant and thus worthy of preservation. Improvements to designated properties are typically subject to review by historic preservation design review boards who rely on both The Secretary of the Interior's Standards for Rehabilitation and locally established Design Guidelines for Historic Districts to ensure that the historic character of the neighborhood is maintained.

Design Guidelines convey general policies about the design of alterations to existing structures, additions, new construction and site work by helping to establish a common understanding of preservation design principles and standards acceptable within a particular area. They serve as a useful starting point when planning any renovation or restoration project, but allow for a variety of design responses. Many Design Guidelines provide standards for the preservation and new construction of sheds, garages and other accessory type buildings. Typical recommendations for outbuildings often includes language that looks like this:

OUTBUILDINGS

Many building in the historic districts have existing historic outbuilding at the rear of the property that were designed to match the primary building in their styles, colors, and materials. These building are considered historic in their own right, and should be retained and repaired whenever possible. The construction of new garages and outbuildings is acceptable, but they should be sited at the rear of the property where they will have the least impact on the primary structure.

• New outbuilding should be sited at the rear of the property, away from the primary facades, or near a rear alley.


• The design of new outbuilding should be compatible with the primary structure in its proportions, roof form, and exterior materials. Traditional materials and details should be used if possible.


• They should be smaller in scale than the primary structure.


• Garage doors should compatible in style and materials if possible. Hinged wood panel carriage doors and wood paneled overhead doors with glazed lights are more appropriate than solid metal or metal paneled units.


• The colors of the new outbuilding should be compatible with the colors of the primary structure.

While these guidelines are fairly simple and straightforward, few off-the-shelf sheds and garages meet the Guideline requirements. In some cases, homeowners try to modify the pre-fabricated sheds by replacing siding, windows or doors with more historically appropriate materials; however, these modifications rarely hide the incompatible roof eave and trim details. A better solution is to custom design and build an outbuilding that incorporates scaled-down details from the main historic home. This includes mimicking the roof slope and overhang, overall proportions, window and door style, and trim details from the primary building. When done properly, the outbuilding can then enhance the historic property, adding charm and utility to the yard.
