Bradford-on-Avon, Wiltshire - A Town of History

England with its long and rich history is still dotted with many a picturesque town. Filled with old world charm and historic buildings, Bradford-on-Avon is one such town in Wiltshire. With a resident population of a mere nine thousand odd, it is an unhurried and restful place to visit. In fact it is one of the foremost tourist destinations for people who want to soak in the culture and beauty of semi-rural England.

The town has grown around the river Avon. One of the most historic monuments of the town is the Town Bridge that spans the river. Constructed for the first time in the 13th century, it has endured seven hundred years of use. With much modifications and renovations, the bridge now is twice its original width. This bridge graces many a postcard and calendar and is the signature showpiece of this delightful town.

The river in olden times was the economic life blood of the town. Bradford-on-Avon had flourished in the seventeenth century, becoming a hub for the textile industry of the region.

Some of the more famous buildings of the town date back from this time of economic growth and development. They are the Tithe Barn, Trinity Church and the Church of St. Laurence. These medieval buildings stand silent testimony to the skill and architectural workmanship of the masons of the region. All transportation in town is dealt by railway station and taxi services. This town to promote its tourist value and to retain its heritage conducts a number of events throughout the year. Some of the more important events are the Raft Race, held annually in May. There is also an annual charity race called the Pancake Race. Weekly there is a local market that sits at the town center on Thursday's.
